Aluminium suits several ways of opening. The right one depends on how much space you have to swing a leaf, and how much of the opening you want clear.
Leaves run horizontally on a track, so nothing swings into the room. The natural choice for balconies, passages and anywhere furniture sits close to the window.
Side-hung leaves that open like a door, giving the full opening for air and sealing tightly when shut. Best where ventilation matters most.
A sealed pane with no opening leaf, maximum light and the slimmest possible sightline. Often combined with an openable leaf alongside.
A small leaf hinged at the top, used above a fixed pane or in bathrooms and kitchens for constant air without a security risk.
Fixed panes with sliding or openable leaves in one frame, so a wide opening reads as a single window with clean vertical lines.

Four things decide how well an aluminium window performs, and they are worth knowing before you specify one.
The extruded aluminium section that forms frame and leaf. Its depth and wall thickness decide how large a pane it can carry and how rigid the window feels.
Powder coating baked onto the metal in the colour you choose, or an anodised finish. This is what resists sun, salt air and rain over the years.
The glass sits on setting blocks and is held by a bead against EPDM rubber gaskets. Good gasketing is what keeps out water, dust and noise.
Rollers, handles, locks and friction stays. On a sliding window the rollers matter most, they decide whether the leaf still glides in five years.
Two sliding windows can look identical and run completely differently. The difference is where the leaves meet and how they move, an interlocking meeting rail that shuts tight against wind and dust, a separate track carrying the mosquito mesh, and rollers rated for the weight of the glass so the leaf still glides years from now.
We size the section to the span rather than the other way round, so the window is not working at its limit on day one.
The sliding system scales up. A balcony or terrace opening becomes a run of full-height glass that slides aside, light and an open view by day, and a wide clear span when you want the room and the outside to be one.
Big leaves only stay smooth with the right section and rollers behind them, so we size both to the panel, a tall slider should still move with one hand.

We make both, so we have no reason to push you either way. As a rule of thumb: choose wood when the window is part of the character of the room, a bedroom, a traditional elevation, anywhere you want warmth, natural insulation and a surface you can re-polish for decades.
Choose aluminium when the opening is large, the elevation is modern, the exposure is harsh, or maintenance has to be near zero, balconies, full-height glazing, sea-facing walls and commercial work. Many houses use both, and we can supply the whole set together.

Bare aluminium does conduct heat, which is why the glass specification matters so much. Tinted, reflective or double glazing does most of the work of cutting heat gain, and the frame is a small part of the total opening. If thermal comfort is the priority for a particular room, wood is the better material, we will tell you so.
Sliding if space is tight or furniture sits near the window, since no leaf swings into the room, and it suits wide balcony openings. Casement if ventilation is the priority, the whole opening clears and the leaf seals tightly against the frame when shut, which generally keeps out dust and rain better.
A properly applied powder coat is baked onto the metal and holds colour far better than paint. Darker shades absorb more heat and show dust less; lighter shades stay cooler. For sea-facing or highly exposed elevations, tell us and we will specify the finish accordingly.
Yes. Mesh leaves run on their own track alongside the glass leaves, so you can slide the glass open and leave the mesh across. On casement windows the mesh is a hinged frame on the inside.
